Doggie Auditions

Thursday night I received an email about Disney's Casting Call for a "bark on roll" in the next canine Disney movie. I made a few calls to invite some of Auggie's doggie friends, threw him in the bath and got him all squeaky clean. He packed up some treats and eye-catching outfits and went to sleep dreaming about becoming a star. The next morning we woke up bright and early to head down to Centennial Olympic Park to participate in the festivities!

Auggie had a blast and met some new friends. We signed up for the auditions and got our number-we were number NINE of about 30 entrants! While we were waiting in line with our doggie friends, I started to feel somewhat like a pageant mom from one of those shows on TV. I had my drool rag for Auggie's slober and kept making sure his collar was on "just right!" When it was finally our turn to walk the doggie catwalk, a local radio DJ announced Auggie and he strutted his stuff for the crowd! He was much larger and goofier than most of the other canine contestants, but hopefully he worked it enough for the camera to get his call back soon!

If it turns out that Hollywood isn't quite ready for a dog like Auggie, at least we can say he had fun getting lots of petting and treats, as well as being a great ambassador for the bully breed. A job well done in my opinion! Plus, he really enjoyed the stuffed Chihuahua toy he got to bring home as a souvenir.

Free Spays/Neuters for Pit Bulls!

Contact the Atlanta Humane Society today to schedule a free spay/neuter for your pit bull or pit bull mix! Please spread the word. Although these are the greatest dogs on the face of the planet (ok, I'm a little biased) the over-population of pitties is soaring. There aren't enough homes for them all, and the sad fact of the matter is that for every 600 pitties in a shelter, ONE gets adopted. The other 599 are euthanized. So lets team together and get those pitties the snip-snip!

Dog Dental Disease

I know most of you have gotten to know my herd of pooches and especially Sophie, my administrative assistant. Well she is the poster-pooch for canine dental disease. Since she was six months old, battling the tarter and plaque has been an ongoing battle.

Sophie has had multiple dental cleanings through her 15 years with us. In addition to dental cleanings by her regular vet, Sophie has also visited Atlanta Veterinary Dental Services where she had 3 infected teeth pulled and a root canal on one of her upper canine teeth. As she started getting older, I began brushing her teeth more frequently as I was hesitant to have any more cleanings done since she is a senior girl. Last week we finally took the plunge and went in to visit Dr. Mees at AVDS for Sophie's second trip about 6 years after the first. During her visit, she had to have 8 more teeth removed for various reasons such as infection and abscesses.

Studies at the Veterinary Colleges of Ohio State and Cornell University have found that 85% of dogs and cats over 6 years old have some form of dental disease. When pets develop this disease, it can affect the rest of their body as well. With infection in the mouth,, bacteria is constantly forming and then moving through the digestive system. This can lead to liver and kidney disease in pets if left untreated. Problems left untreated can also cause pets to stop eating if the pain becomes severe enough.

To avoid these problems, check your pet's mouth for plaque build-up often and brush your pet's teeth on a regular basis. For Sophie, Dr. Mees recommended at least 5 times per week. The mouth is the first part of the digestive tract and can affect the entire body. The phrase "dog breath" means that it is time for a visit with your vet!
